Stadholder William III gives Protestant England military assistance in deposing James II, the father of his wife, Mary Stuart. James is seen as an absolutist ruler with pro-Catholic tendencies. The campaign, using an army funded by the Republic, is successful and William and Mary are subsequently crowned joint monarchs.
